What Is ASTM International? A Practical Guide for Industrial Buyers and Manufacturers

5. Common Misunderstandings About ASTM
Misunderstanding 1: ASTM Is Only Useful in the United States

Misunderstanding 2: If a Product Mentions ASTM, It Must Be Certified by ASTM
This is also not accurate.
In most cases, “ASTM compliant” means that the product was tested according to a certain ASTM standard or claims to meet a certain ASTM specification. It does not automatically mean that ASTM itself issued a product certification.

9. How to Use ASTM Standards on a Product Page
For industrial product pages, ASTM information should not be treated as decoration. It should help the buyer answer three practical questions:
- Which standard is relevant to this product?
- Does the standard define a test method or a product specification?
- Can the supplier provide evidence such as a test report, CoC, or batch traceability record?
A good product page should separate the following information:
